Forever Modern Mules

Louis Vuitton; Source

I have walked a mile in my mother’s mules. Ok, I know what you are thinking. No, this was not recent. The point is that mules are so retro that they were fashionable before the word retro became popular.  I did walk a miles in my mother’s mules but I was probably four or five at the time. I loved playing dress up. Besides putting on my mother’s clothes and choosing the perfect handbag from her wardrobe putting on a pair of her mules was a must. I think this may have stemmed from those black and white movies I watched at a young age. I may not have quite understood the plot but it seemed that many of the glamorous film starts had on a pair of mules at one time or another in this or that scene. I still equate mules with film stars such as Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard and Marilyn Monroe. I will always associate them with glamour for that reason.

Of course, women dressed in a more uniform manner back then. The freedom to express ourselves in how we dress has naturally effected the types of mules that are commonly worn. While I still love mules designed specifically for glamour’s sake I cannot logically wear those type of mules on an everyday basis which proves the old saying that what is old is new is thoroughly accurate. Red mules, during the days when emperors reigned supreme, were worn by magistrates to denote their status but were not commonly worn outside of that due to their impracticality. In the 15th century affluent Venetian women wore mules for essentially the same reason, as a symbol of their social power. The common thread amongst powerful mule-wearers from different centuries is that they largely wore their mules inside. They were not widely worn when a lot of walking and running would be necessary.

This high-heel pump and slipper hybrid which has been a beloved shoe not only among celebrities of old but among historical figures such as courtesans, popes and artists has certainly come a long way. Just take a stroll through an art museum to see how many illustrious figures are shod in mules in paintings throughout the centuries. It has certainly been proven that if a pair of mules were to be put in an imaginary time capsule anyone whom opened the capsule would be able to readily discern that mules not only retained their popularity but they look largely the same as they did many, many years ago. This can’t be said of many items. I think, therefore, I can state with certainty that mules never really became outdated enough to change their basic design; just as I can state with certainty that they remain difficult, for some, to walk or run a mile in.

I occasionally have trouble walking in mules; particularly, open-toe mules. I have had several almost accidents walking in them. These incidents consisted of tripping, sliding forward and other mishaps that almost resulted in a sprained ankle or knee. I walk different in them than I do in other shoes. I tend to shy away from open-toe mules, for this reason, which is fine with me since there are more than enough closed-toe mules to meet my fashion needs.  I have always considered myself balance-challenged but the amount of work required by my calves may have more to do with my mishaps than my balance. I won’t shy away from mules this spring and summer though so I guess I am a glutton for punishment. Mules, to me, are near the top of the shoe chain. After all, if a shoe was good enough for notable figures such as Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour, I think I can do my part, like the stylish ladies of fashion below, to make sure that the world’s long love affair with mules keeps going.

Today, of course, they are a favorite spring shoe prominently featured in the world of advertisement and film. Are you acquainted with Candies? How about Daisy Duke from the Dukes of Hazard? Mules are a part of pop culture and will likely remain so. So grab some mules and clomp around in style. Just make sure your balance is up to the challenge.  Also, please remember, if your goal is to walk in silence that mules probably should not be your first choice of footwear. Mules are likely to announce your impending arrival as they go clomp, clomp, and clomp as you walk.

What do you think of mules? I always look forward to comments so please don’t be shy.

Thank you to my followers for their continued support.

A Love for Oxfords

Karen Walker Spring 2014; Source

I was never really a fan of oxford shoes until I spotted a pair of patent leather ruby red mid-heel oxfords at Famous Brand shoe store a couple of years ago. There were a couple of things that drew me to them: the color and the fact that they had a heel beyond the usual one inch heel I associated with oxfords. The bottom line is that they were so appealing because they have a feminine vibe that is undeniably obvious. I have nothing against oxfords that resemble men’s oxfords but sometimes I just want to wear a shoe that has a strong feminine air about it. The single factor that had previously made the idea of owning a pair of oxfords unappealing to me is that many designers seemed to design women’s oxfords in the exact same manner as they did men’s oxfords. I prefer oxfords that have feminine elements. That is one of the reasons I love my red oxfords so much. The other is that they are a splendid example of another item women essentially borrowed from the boys and never returned just like jeans and tuxedos. We make items that were initially worn by men our own. Note: The looks below are from Mary Katrantzou's Spring 2014 runway show.

I also spotted, about a year after I purchased my red oxfords, a black pair of high-heel oxfords that also drew me in. They were not at the same level as my red oxfords but they were still so delightful that I could not resist adding them to my shoe stash. They resemble a pair of high-heel oxfords I envisioned a professional business woman from the 1950s wearing when she did not have on a pair of pumps or mary janes. They have a more quiet appearance than my red pair but they are just so stately and refined that they are true rivals to other shoes in my closet when I feel like dressing in a more classic manner. My red and black oxfords could not be more different but what they have in common is the type of details I find appealing as a woman with an eclectic dress style. They are beguiling because they can be paired with so many different types of outfits from skirts and blouses to dresses that they are considered as MVPs in my shoe collection. The fact that they are comfortable certainly doesn’t hurt either.

There are so many variations of oxfords now. Whether you like flat-heel oxfords that are more reminiscent of men’s oxfords, you prefer oxfords that have cut-outs or you like to dabble in wearing mixed-media oxfords the options available are endless. I am currently thinking of adding a pair of mixed-media oxfords to my wardrobe. There is something about leather and lace oxfords that appeal to me. I suspect because I am such a fan of mixing textiles. The only thing stopping me is that I am also drawn to metallic oxfords. I am sure you have seen them at boutiques, at online retailers and in department stores everywhere. I like statement shoes and metallic oxfords fit the bill perfectly. I may just add a pair of mixed-media and a pair of metallic oxfords to my shoe collection if the prices are right. Note: The below looks are from Karen Walker's Spring 2014 runway show.

The good news is that oxfords will remain popular from spring to winter as supported by their incorporation into spring and fall runway collections. Let the wearing of oxfords, in earnest, commence. Note: The looks below are from Michael Kors Pre-Fall 2014 runway show.

Cut It Out

ABSYNTH Stiletto Cut-Out Bootie, Topshop, www.topshop.com, $156.00
Lace-Up Waist Shirt, Web Exclusive, Forever 21, www.forever21.com, $19.80

There surely must have been a pile of geometric shaped fabric on the floors of design houses the world over when cut-out clothing was propelled into the fashion world. Garments and shoes that look like children decided to take a pair of scissors to them are both visually intriguing and fashionably daring. I admit I was completely taken aback upon first spotting the trend. I asked myself, “Who would buy a garment that appeared as if it had been partially destroyed shortly after being placed on the rack?” Initially, the cut-out trend was restricted to one-piece bathing suits in the swimwear industry. Now, cut-out garments have infiltrated other fashion niches, such as womenswear. Cut-out pieces have just exploded into the fashion sphere. It is now quite common for a single garment to have more than two or three cut-outs. Talk about taking the cold-shoulder top to a whole new level!

Trendy boutiques, such as Nastygal, Topshop and Forever 21 routinely feature cut-out clothing. I know what you’re thinking. It may be getting chillier where you are but grab some extra garments and layer, layer, layer! Find the correct pieces to layer under your cut-out shirt or sweater and soldier on! Graphic print pieces are perfect for layering under cut-out garments. You can also add an extra level of intrigue to an outfit featuring a cut-out garment by pairing the garment with a piece in a different texture. A lace top layered beneath a cut-out sweater will give your outfit an extra amount of zest. You can also pair a cut-out shirt in a neutral or monochromatic shade with a bold-colored tank or camisole for a glamorous look.

Never Look Back Knit Sweater, Nasty Gal. www.nastygal.com, $68.00

Someone definitely let the genie out of the bottle when they decided that cut-outs would be accepted and celebrated as chic amongst fashionistas who set the bar for style. Have you perused a fashion magazine lately? A large fraction of footwear prominently featured in articles and advertisements consist of multiple cut-outs. Have you browsed the shoe section of department stores or online boutiques lately? It may be getting chillier outside for those of us that live in areas where the temperature dips during the fall; however, the shoes and boots featured in the shoe section supports an illusion that it is still warm across most of the globe. I think the question has been answered about why tights suddenly become a girl’s best friend during fall and winter.
