Fashion Designer Credentials Required

For all the luxury fashion brands that flourish there are many more that flounder. Over the course of the past few fashion weeks, I have found myself wondering about the high-end fashion brands that are no more. Just recently, actress Katie Holmes spokesperson announced that Holmes and her stylist, Jeanne Yang, were ending their fashion line. Creative differences may have come into play based on the rumors swirling around the announcement; however, whether that is true or not, the brand never really seemed to elevate their designs to a level demanded by those whose responsibility it is to assess the worthiness of luxury apparel presented on runways and in lookbooks. Could this perhaps, have been the reason for the downfall of the line? The answer may never be revealed; however, I have come to my own conclusions about the reason some celebrity lines have been successful while others have not. Entry into the world of the luxury fashion industry is to me like trying to enter an elite club. If you don’t have the right credentials you either won’t be accepted or you won’t be allowed to remain for long. Sometimes, when people knock on a door even if they are celebrities the door does not open. This analogy is certainly true of celebrities whom try to gain acceptance into the elite world of luxury apparel design. If they want to have staying power as a member they must demonstrate to fashion editors, writers and a slew of other fashion elites that they intend to make fashion design their career. Otherwise, they risk being perceived as someone who dabbles in this or that but can not be taken seriously.

I suspect that this is the reason Sweetface, the high-end line launched by Jennifer Lopez, was never really accepted by fashion insiders as a luxury line. Jennifer Lopez, in my opinion, has an Energizer bunny outlook on life for sure. She sings, she dances, she acts and she judges talent. My goodness, I am exhausted just listing all of her ongoing achievements. I wonder if fashion insiders did not take her brand, Sweetface, as seriously as she deserved because of a belief that she was just another celebrity trying to get into their elite designer club without giving her full attention to the craft of designing luxury apparel.

I believe that this mentality has resulted in an uphill battle for celebrities whom start their own fashion lines. History seems to support this. Celebrities whom either temporarily or permanently sideline their acting or music careers to attend to the development of their high-end fashion lines appear to have more success than those who don’t. There are, of course, celebrities whom have defied these odds by managing to have a successful entertainment career and fashion career; however, the number of celebrities whom are able to do so is few and far between. Those who are able to do so appear to be able to manage both careers so successfully because they are savvy enough to have a shrewd and talented design partner and head designer.

For every extinct celebrity brand, however, there are others that have flourished. L.A.M.B., Gwen Stefani’s brand has maintained its fashion cache at a steady pace since its launch. Reviews have generally been mixed since the launch of the brand but one thing that has been universally agreed upon is that Gwen Stefani has remained true to her personal aesthetic. You can always envision her wearing the clothes she designs. Perhaps, this is the reason she has been so successful. The success of L.A.M.B. seems to prove again that in order to have a sustainable career as a fashion designer a celebrity must prove to the fashion world that they are so serious about pursuing the art of fashion design that they will make it the center point of their career. Gwen Stefani, for example, took several years off from creating music with the band No Doubt to focus on developing her fashion brand. The songstress may have been given more props because she set her music career aside to attend to her brand (and of course to start a family).

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, founders of arguably one of the most successful celebrity luxury brands, have proven their mettle in the fashion industry with their lines, Elizabeth and James and The Row. Their brands are lauded as consistently commercial, super refined and are widely worn by other celebrities. When celebrities wear your clothes that is a sure sign that you have been accepted as a legitimate fashion designer. So eager were the Olsens to start their fashion careers that they left school early to do so. Obtaining a degree from a storied design school is the best route to success in most cases but they bucked the trend. This duo exhibited a zealousness for apparel design that fashion elites just could not turn away from; particularly, after they demonstrated by their immediacy in starting their line that they were completely devoted to all things fashion.

Like the Olsens, fashion doors have also opened to Victoria Beckham. She seems to have, by sure will and a knack for recognizing what classic style really means to have ensured the door was opened wide and with a smile for her. Her fashion house is growing in spades with talk of a possible menswear line. Is there anything this woman can not accomplish in the world of fashion? She seems to have gone from the pop world to the fashion world in warp speed but it is apparent that her dedication to her craft has made her a fashion designer that has earned the respect of the fashion sartorialists.

Earlier I mentioned that there was an exception to what seems to be a requirement to focus only on a fashion career. The exception is the clothing line, Edun, founded by rock star Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson. This luxury brand has successfully stayed the course while Bono maintained his music career. It has been extremely beneficial, of course, for them to consistently have a strong head designer to capably oversee the creation of garments. It is apparent that their goal to support the trade industry in Africa as well as to contribute to the creation of jobs in that country has always remained at the forefront. As a result of their relationships with talented individuals in Africa this brand is synonymous with creating fashion-forward textiles which are in turn used to create the garments in their collections. The brands experimentation with textures may be the reason they have garnered so much admiration from their fashion industry peers.

The Green Scene

Green finally has its time in the spotlight. Designers are once again in love with this earthy, bold and, at times, quirky color. The Spring runway shows were awash in green apparel and accessories. Many refrain from purchasing green apparel because they are uncertain about how they can incorporate such a polarizing color into their wardrobe. There is no need to be timid when determining how you can shine in green. Green has a strong presence when paired with neutral colors such as beige and gray yet sparkles when matched with shades of blue and swatches of pink.

Many dismiss green as a color that does not play well with other colors but this is truly a fable not deserving of such a beautiful shade. Designers have periodically been drawn to the boldness of emerald green and kelly green because of the vibrancy of both shades; however, the masses have rarely embraced this color outside of St. Patrick's Day. I so look forward to seeing more of this color in the apparel worn by fashion divas.

If I still have not persuaded you, try incorporating green in a subtle manner into your wardrobe. Mint green will be super popular this Spring. It is less vivid than emerald or kelly green but is the perfect shade for light spring and summar apparel when paired with equal sorbet colors such as pale peach and pink.

Recommendations: Next time you purchase a neutral-colored suit add a pair green pumps or platforms. Have a pastel pink suit? Add a bold green bag. A white blouse, blue trousers and green accessories equal an outfit that is very chic. The compliments will flow effortlessly all day!

St. Louis Fashion Week Review: Indulge

The Indulge fashion event presented  by Brown Shoe Company and produced by Alive Magazine on 10/12/12 was truly spectacular. The collection of apparel on display on the runway by Ann Taylor and Eileen Fisher could be the basis of a workshop about the best approach to layering.

Anny Taylor did not tinker with their formula of their success; however, they paired their proven formula of preppy, classic and chic garments with bold-colors, such as orange and yellow, which will surely prove to be a winner for this retailer. A particular stunner was a charcoal metallic cape worn with the must-have slim-fitting trousers of the season. This stunner would work well with jeans, the ubiquitous slim-fitting trousers I referenced and with pencil skirts. The retailer also charmingly used scarves to drape the neckline of knit dresses and crewneck sweaters.

Eileen Fisher also truly impressed with knit dresses that could readily be layered with other garments. A sleeveless knit dress in a burgundy/maroon tone, which is a popular color this season, has such an elegance about it that it can be dressed up or down dependent upon your destination. This dress can be worn over a blouse for a classic look or worn similar to the runway look which was with a wide-belt.

I would be remiss if I did not reference the stunning garments on display by a favorite designer BCBG Max Azria. The luxurious gold-dress presented by this designer was stellar and a true representation of a statement dress. The simple streamline-shape was the perfect silhouette for this sleeveless column-dress that seemed as if it was made of spun gold. Another superb garment was the black and white animal print skirt that contained a solid black front-panel and animal print side panels. This skirt was beguiling.

Juicy Couture's collection was well represented by gem-toned faux-fur jackets, capes and coats that were simply stunning.

Lucky Brand Jean's whirlwind display of denim in scene-stealing prints, patterns and metallics was fabulous to behold. I fell in love with a mixed-print pair of jeans that I can only describe as a an animal print-jungle print hybrid.

The evening was all that I anticipated and more.

St. Louis Fashion Week: Fall in Fashion Review

The amazing collections displayed by the designers and retailers the night of the Fall in Fashion event on 10/11/12 presented by Brown Shoe Company and produced by Alive Magazine at the St. Louis Galleria, are indicative of the combination of sporty-glam that has become so pervasive in fashion. Cropped slim-fitting pants worn by the models on the runway were accented with a panel in a contrasting color down the side of the pants leg. The color-blocked slim-fitting pants had a sporty vibe reminiscent of jodhpurs or ski pants. The designers glamourized the cropped pants by pairing them with tie-neck colored-blouses, metallic and jewel-toned ponchos and faux-fur vests which made for a  compelling look. The Limited's slim-fit pants although not color-blocked were amongst my favorite. The black pants with black faux-leather side panels are elegant yet sexy enough to transition from the office to the club.

I was also enthralled by the sheer blouses and high-waisted pencil skirts displayed by the models on the runway. This look is so charming and chic. My favorite pairing was the sheer black blouse and golden-yellow nautical skirt by Apricot Lane. The pairing of a blouse and pencil skirt is so classic in women's wear; however, the dichotomy of a sheer blouse and the traditional pencil skirt made this outfit a stand -out. The entire outfit had a romantic yet contemporary vibe due to the high-waist of the skirt, the double rows of buttons on the skirt and the decision to select a sheer fabric for the blouse.

Brooks Brothers and Ann Taylor's collections were also superb. Both continue to offer classic garb in traditional fabrics that both women and men can depend on for that certain refined appearance so many of us depend on when we want to look effortlessly elegant. Tweed blazers, sweater vests and straight-legged trousers  by Brooks Brothers were supremely on exhibit on the runway.

I enjoyed the beige trench coat, the jewel-colored blouses and pencil skirts on display by Ann Taylor. While the garments are so representative of what Ann Taylor offers every autumn season there is no reason to change a formula that works! That is the reason this designer continues to be a favorite of women. This designer specializes in basic staples that are necessary pieces for every woman's wardrobe.
