A Shoe by Any Other Name

Platforms make up a portion of my shoe wardrobe because I simply need the height advantage they give me. From the time my mom started letting me wear heels platforms have been a rather common type of shoe in my closet. All platforms are not created equal in my book, however. I really love the platforms that are common amongst pumps, open-toed sandals and the like but I just don’t have a feel-good vibe for flatforms. I hope those of you who do did not actually gasp at this statement but you who know me best from being my beloved followers understand that no matter what catches my fancy to blog about I will always remain truthful with you.

Flatforms and I are just not a match made in heaven or any other place for that matter. It does not matter, however, because for you, my friends I will continue to post about all things fashion whether I love them or hate them. We all have diverse fashion interests. I respect that and I love that. Isn’t that makes fashion so fantastic? It is really a way for us to inject a little or a lot of our inner spirit into our outer armor. Don’t despair my flatform-wearing friends because I have included images of some flatform darlings you just may fall in love with. Psssst...I'll admit I can see myself in the ballerina flatforms below and the white cuties too. I would be willing to make an exception to my flatform rules for those.

Follow along with me as I tell you a little bit here and a little bit there about platforms. I simply can’t ignore them because you know what? They are going to be so popular this spring and well into fall. Did you see any of Alexander Wang’s New York Fashion Show? If not, I urge you to posthaste due so on Style.com or wherever you get your latest fashion news. I must say the platforms boots on display there were, for lack of any better word at the moment, yummy.
Platforms used to be worn for reasons such as to keep one’s feet from getting mired in dirt on city streets or to elevate the stature of important characters in various theatrical productions or even for the reason some of us where them now to boost our height and the like or because ladies just wanted a bit of a boost to their stature. Everyone from ancient Ancient Greek theatrical actors to 16th Courtesans wore them. What impressed me the most, however, while reading about the history of the platform is that the great 1930s actress Marlene Dietrich loved platforms. She is a woman after my own heart. I knew I had more in common with her than just our need to look absolutely dapper in a tuxedo. Perhaps, she'd like some of the platforms below. They sure catch my fancy.

Everyone from 70s Glam rockers to disco divas to 80s fashionistas wore them. Even Minnie Mouse and a couple of Disney princesses wore them. Does that impress you? If not just read through the list below. Surely, you think kindly of the individuals below whom have been on stage and/or off wearing some form of a platform.

Elton John

David Bowie

The Spice Girls

Lady Gaga

Charli XCX

That puts me in good company as far as I am concerned. Tell me what you think…. pretty please. Do you love them or can you leave them?

Let's ooh and ah or say blah to the flatforms and platforms below before we say goodbye.

  2. Hola Sharon!!!! Maravillosas colecciones... Las plataformas con tacones me encantan, en zapato plano tengo mis dudas, creo que no estilizan nada, pero la moda ya se sabe...

  4. Interesting post. I have never really been a fan of any type of plat or flatform. I am a lover of a delicate shoe. I am about 5 feet tall and have very small feet. Platforms simply make my petite feet look awkward. I am, however, a fan of the Michael Kors that you show in picture number 7. I thought the way in which he styled them for his spring 2015 collection was perfection. But then again, I feel like Michael is a god in American sportswear. I can see wearing them in a floaty summer dress or skirt, or with cuffed denim. So fun.

    1. I can understand why they don't suit those with smaller feet. I like the platforms because they give me the amount of height I like to have. People are so amazed when they see me wear flats because they are used to seeing me in heels so much. It is often funny to see their reaction when they see me in flats. Michael Kors is definitely wonderful, Glenda. I know you are a huge fan of his. I just recently purchased a neutral pair of Michael Kors pumps. I love them so much. I have been wearing them like crazy. They are quite comfortable and go with everything. It is great to hear from you. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

  7. Awesome selections! I enjoy wearing platforms...the Tom Fords and Marchesa are fab! Although I do love a good platform, I'm not really a fan of the flatforms...I think they tend to look very boxy and not so dainty.
    Fab post Sharon!

  25. I'd be inclined to say 'blah', but under flared jeans, I say yay! They're the perfect shoe to wear with a flared or very long, baggy pant as they give you height, comfort and best of all, you don't really see them much ;) Some styles are ok to wear with long skirts too, but I find it really difficult to find a visually appealing flatform or platform shoe!

    Great post!! Great shoes!!

    1. I always value your opinion, Cristina, so thanks so much for the comment. I do love a good platform but only those that are ladylike. I don't care much for flatforms but I have to admit the green Delpozo's and the white mesh flatforms are appealing.

    1. That is so cool, Talitha. I strongly believe that individual style is so important. How boring it would be if everyone dressed to please others. I admit flatforms are not my favorite type of shoe but I was pleasantly surprised to find that some were definitely pleasing. I really like the Delpozo flatforms, for instance.
