Fanny Packs for Knick Knacks

I heard a radio station deejay say the other day, while I was out and about completing errands, that he was going to bring fanny packs back this summer by pairing them with denim shorts and a tee. I wonder if anyone broke the news to him that he is late to the game because they are already back. Fanny packs were noticed in the 1980s but really took off as a trend in the 1990s. They have briefly returned since that time but now it seems they are being propelled again into prominence. They did not really go to fashion purgatory like so many trends do when they are out of the spotlight. They just returned to being solely the sporty accessory that they were initially designed to be rather than a fashionable accessory that a stylish woman or man would aspire to wear even when not engaging in sporting activities. Note: Tory Burch Pre-Spring 2014 Ready to Wear photos courtesy of Style.com

Before I heard the deejay’s comment, thoughts of fanny packs were already floating around in my mind. This is perhaps the result of all of the runway images I have seen recently of these notorious pouches. Designers like Tory Burch and Karl Lagerfeld, with help from celebrities like Rihanna, Selma Blair and Kanye West, are responsible for bringing back these hip slingers. They have been widely seen since last year in runway collections, lookbooks and slung on the hips of the famous crowd. The way they are currently being re-packaged is splendid. Modern fanny packs are in so many attractive prints and shades that they are a tad appealing. Follow along with me, please, as I explain how I have categorized fanny packs.
Photos Courtesy of Why Did You Wear That

One version is what I have dubbed the camouflage fanny packs. They show up on runways in the same shade or color palettes which exist in the outfit worn by the model. Camouflage fanny packs obviously still shoot straight from the hip but in a subtle manner. Of course, the problem is that it is doubtful if people will purchase a large quantity of fanny packs just so they can coordinate them with outfits in the same shade or color palettes. Talk about unrealistic. This version is most likely to be worn by women. I truly can not picture men color-coordinating a fanny pack with their outfit. For any gentleman reading this, please, please I beg you to correct me if I am wrong.

Another version of the fanny pack just begs to be looked at even though it is already fairly easy to spot one on the wearer. They are in a variety of prints and patterns that don’t even try to cower into the background. These are what I call the statement-making fanny packs. They are bold and sassy. They are the type of accessory that can overpower an outfit if worn with the wrong pieces or which can cause a separates clash when worn with bold-colored separates that already take center stage. It takes a confident woman or man to embrace this version of the fanny pack.

The third version is the neutrals. Not as flamboyant as the first two types they, nevertheless, serve the same purpose; a safe place to store valuable knick knacks. I think of neutral-colored fanny packs as those which are most likely to be worn by individuals who appreciate the purpose of the hip pouch yet still may be a fraction embarrassed about wearing a fanny pack. Neutral fanny packs sometimes come in the form of a belt pouch. I hate to break it to you belt pouch wearers but whether you wear it directly strapped around your hip or attached to a belt a fanny pack is a fanny pack. It won't magically disappear from view just because it is attached to a belt.
Fanny packs from Nicole Lee may be in contention to be worn on my hips soon. They beckon to me even now. I am thinking about taking the plunge and purchasing one. I don’t suppose I can wear a fanny pack with my bags though and I am so attached to my handbags. I don’t have to take my bags everywhere though. Let’s face it, taking a bag some places can literally be a drag. The reason I like these so much is that they have personality. Take a look at two of my favorites below. You'll see what I mean. Can I get away with wearing a fanny pack if it has personality? You be the judge. Note: Nicole Lee fanny packs are available on Nicole Lee's website.

"Bicycle" Fanny Pack
"Dolly" Fanny Pack

Fanny packs are being forced back into popularity but they are still considered to have a nerdy reputation. I am not sure that will change despite being pushed into the fashion mainstream by designers and retailers.

You have probably deduced by now that I am not averse to fanny packs if they are stylish, of course. What do you think of fanny packs? Are they a fashion do or a fashion don’t?

Don't Knock the Socks

Saint Laurent

The cyclical nature of fashion is so transparent. The evolving way in which socks have been paired with clothing is one such example of this. Just a few years ago, I would never have believed that the value of socks would skyrocket to another level in the fashion realm; yet, somehow, they have. I never considered socks a fashion must-have until fairly recently. They were just what I wore to keep my feet warm. I still hate to wear them because they make my feet hot and, at times, itchy. I am usually amongst the first to go without them as soon as spring arrives and amongst the last individuals to begin wearing them  as mid-autumn arrives in the northern hemisphere. I think of them so differently now as a result of how prominently they are featured on the feet of street-style stars and runway models. Dial it back with me if you would for just a few moments so that you may understand my prior feelings about socks.

I paired, just like many other girls during the early stages of my school years, socks with skirts and shirts that were within school uniform regulations; however, as I entered public high school it was not hip to pair them with skirts mainly because this look was associated with nerds and geeks in public high school. Wearing non-trendy attire during my school days would have placed me firmly into weirdo category. Avoiding a fashion faux-pas was hard enough in high school without intentionally going out of my way to look different.

Around the same time, my friends and I compared notes about why so many men of the senior citizen persuasion wore socks with sandals or dress oxfords when they wore shorts in the spring and summer. We shared quite a bit of laughter upon the sighting of this type of outfit on our own grandpas. The strange thing is that this foible seemed to be solely attributable to men around the age of 60 or above. Women in the same age demographic, for some reason, seemed to be immune to the socks and sandals pairing. It never occurred to me that a couple of decades later men in the senior years of their life would deserve props for being on the forefront of fashion for pairing socks with their summer casual attire. Men in the senior citizen demographic sort of had it right back then. Sort of, only because it is still considered taboo for men to wear socks with sandals. I must say though that there is definite gender discrimination associated with this today. Why is it acceptable for women to wear socks with sandals but not men? In general, it is still considered a fashion faux-pas for men.

No, no, a resounding no to this look men!
This is a fashion don't men. Please don't do this.

Bobby Soxers, celebrity fans and fashion-mad young women, were at the forefront of this current trend, as well. These young women really set the bar high when they paired their socks with saddle shoes or loafers and poodle skirts. Does it get anymore preppy glam than that? Bobby Soxers really knew how to party down as they danced away in their ankle socks and saddle shoes. Talk about putting some pep in your sock-covered steps.

I also became more aware of the fashion star quality of socks when I noticed how darling knee-high socks look when paired with tall boots. Many of you have created some superb looks by featuring socks so prominently with your tall boots. In fact the pairing is like peanut butter and jelly this season. They just naturally go together.

Socks, dare I say, have become quite a glamorous accoutrement to skirts and dresses. I only wonder how long socks will ride the popularity wave. What do you think? Are we destined to see them perpetually paired with skirts and dresses throughout 2014 or beyond?

How Do You Find Chic?

Never were two words more explanatory than the apt named CHIC-Finder, a new fashion app brand. I can hear your cheers of joy, my readers, at the launch of another fashion app. I am a proponent of fashion apps as some of you know from reading my Diary of a Fashion Apps Junkie post a couple of months ago; however, I had to go through self-enforced rehab after I realized that my use of fashion apps was beyond out of control.

I was, therefore, skeptical when asked by CHIC-Finder to review their app. I doubted if the app could really fulfill its mission amidst the already crowded fashion apps’ landscape. Chic-Finder is a fashion community, fashion-finder and shopping tool all rolled into one. It did not take me long to wonder how this app would be able to successfully fulfill all of these functions

The process to register with CHIC-Finder consist of immediately selecting a minimum of three community members to follow before moving on to the selection of a minimum of three brands to follow. I will admit I was initially taken aback by having to select followers so quickly after registering. I felt like I was at a mixer where I had just stepped into the room, put on my name tag and was commanded to go find three people to meet. I quickly moved on in the process with a feeling of where is this app going to take me next?

I was subsequently taken to a feed page that contained pictures collected by the community members I followed. This is really where it became interesting. CHIC-Finder, I discovered was not just an app for clothing and accessories. There were photos of furniture, sporting equipment and a hodge-podge of many different types of items that made me wonder; now I am getting somewhere. I discovered a toboggan that is so magnificent that if I was into toboggans I would love to have if I belonged to the wealthy crowd. A sled available at Anthropologie conjured up similar feelings.
De Petra Tassel  Mountain Boy Sled

Next, I stumbled upon a distressed dresser that would look superb if I lived in a mansion. Anyway, after I reeled myself back in from the brink of daydream land, I was able to focus on the clothes and accessories again that those I followed had snapped.

The usefulness of the CHIC-Finder shopping feature makes it an app I will probably use to browse specific items by my favorite designers and retailers. The large number of designer brands and the shopping possibilities on CHIC-Finder are unlimited. Approximately 600 clothing and accessory items were available for me to browse when I randomly selected to search for items by 3.1 Phillip Lim and about 3,700 items were found when I conducted a search for items by Asos. There is no doubt that this app is like a hand-held personal shopper.

I can definitely see myself checking in frequently just to see what the community members I have followed decided to visually collect during their fashion excursions on CHIC-Finder. I found more than a few items I am craving right now like this faux-leather dress and metallic tunic:
Regence Tunic; Anthropologie
Zipper-Trim Faux Leather Dress; Charlotte Russe

The primary purpose, however, of CHIC-Finder is to find items identical to or very similar to items a community member photo-snapped while shopping on the app. This feature, as you can imagine, is very handy if you want to find less expensive versions of pieces worn by your favorite celebrities

I put on my cloak of objectivity, tossed on my private eye hat and commenced with my investigation so that I could prepare to identify the pros and cons of CHIC-Finder. I was of the opinion that CHIC-Finder could not possibly find amongst its broad inventory matching fashion finds in a reasonable time frame.

I used the search feature to find shirts similar to a sheer black Asos top I had my eye on. The search results were mostly positive. The shirts presented to me by CHIC-Finder were mostly similar in style to the top on my wish list. There were a few that were throwaways such as a black typography t-shirt and a black polka dot top that did not resemble the shirt that I wanted to become my new BFF. After seeing them, it was a bit like playing can you spot the fakes. I had similar results when I searched for blazers that visually matched a glamorous BCBG MaxAzria print blazer I fell in love with at first sight. All in all, this was a non-issue. I have always subscribed to the mantra that when it comes to finding fashionable clothing and accessories I would rather have more options to choose from than less.

CHIC-Finder is still new; therefore, as with most new apps the brand will make refinements to improve the search process. I expect that this app could become a favorite amongst fashion-lovers. It is user-friendly, contains a lot of fashion inventory to browse and a budding fashion community which gives it a great basis from which it can successfully soar.

I encourage you to find out more about the CHIC-Finder app at http://www.chic-finder.com.

Gauchos: A Cautionary Tale

Gauchos were modeled so much during the Spring and Pre-Fall 2014 runway shows that I began to wonder if designers odd attraction to them was their way of winking at us. Are gauchos a gauntlet that designers are throwing down in an attempt to determine how we can make them translate to real world wear? Wearing gauchos can be dicey. I, normally, have strong opinions about fashion but gauchos have me on the fence. I confess, I am a tad wishy washy about them. I still don’t know for certain, although I have been thinking about it quite a lot lately, whether I can envision myself wearing them. I am just not sure how they will fit into my world. Before I invest in a trend whether it is a fresh trend or a recycled trend I always consider the following:

  • Can I make the trend work with classic pieces in my current wardrobe?
  • Does the trend suit my figure?
  •  Is the trend a reflection of who I am?

If I can not answer all of the above questions to my satisfaction I don’t move forward with a purchase. I have not become engaged to gauchos because I can not quite answer yes to that final question. Note:  Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2014 RTW Photos; Courtesy of Style.com.

I get a lot of my inspiration, for those of you that are new followers to my blog, from an exploration of history. This time, it’s a little different for me. Unlike some of the garments I have made the basis of my blog posts I am actually familiar with the retread factor of gauchos. I wore them during my childhood when my taste was less discriminating since my mother had control over my wardrobe. I may not be sure about them but I respect them. After all, I have to give props to a garment that has the reputation of reappearing almost every decade. They conquered the 70s, made a brief resurgence in the 90s and have slowly strolled back into the current fashion climate. Gauchos have staying power.

8 Observations About Gauchos:

I am not ready to commit to them again; however, if you are, whether it is for the first time or second or so on, I offer to you my observations.

1.      They can give the figure a bottom-heavy appearance so proceed with caution.
2.      The length can be a problem for the petite.
3.      Try them on before you buy a pair for the reasons above.
4.      They pair best with fitted, tailored tops because of the flare-leg.
5.      Whatever you wear on top make sure your waist is defined: Wear a defined-waist top or create a defined waist by belting your top
6.      They look fantastic with boots; particularly, flat-heel boots.
7.      When in doubt, partner them with pieces, with which you would wear a full skirt.
8.      Do your own thing: Using the runway for inspiration is great but from what I have seen in a variety of collections from Derek Lam to Alexander Wang, runway styling is not necessarily realistic when it comes to practicality

I believe the reason I can not currently commit to gauchos is because by their very nature they are slightly confusing. They are, to me, pants with no identity. I have asked myself many times, “What are they?

  • Palazzo pants with a shorter hemline?
  • Wide-leg capri pants?

No gauchos for me right now. They have always been a puzzle to me.

What do you think of gauchos? I would love to hear from you.

Color-Coded Handbags

 Square Tote

I was contacted by brand Angela & Roi to blog about their handbags. It is my hope that you will find much to admire if you are not acquainted with this brand. What I discovered, during my research of this brand, is that their global outreach is both inspirational and affecting. This brand’s mission, based on the popularity of their handbags, has touched many, including myself.

Palette Cross-Body Bag
Angela & Roi's handbags are best described as having a classic identity with a a strong attention to detail. The simple design of their handbags lack bells and whistles for a reason. Who needs bells and whistles when you have classic elegance? I’ll take simple elegance thank you very much. Their bags are not trendy. They are even better. They are timeless. The type of handbags the brand designs includes totes, shoulder bags, backpacks and cross-body bags. The handbags contain the finest of hardware and durable fabrics which together embody quality craftsmanship. In addition, the handbags are comprised of vegan leather which helps Angela & Roi keep the price point of their handbags appealing.
 Everyday Long Tote

Five dollars from the sale of each handbag is donated to charitable organizations. The diversity of the organizations that Angela & Roi are allied with strongly supports the brand’s mission to combine fashion and altruism. The non-profit organizations they donate to focus their efforts on the research of and treatment of illnesses such as AIDS, kidney disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s. How do they translate their mission in a manner that engages their customers? By incorporating colors into their handbag designs that represent specific charitable causes. For example, the purchase of a white handbag will ensure that a five dollar donation is made to the Lung Cancer Alliance and the purchase of a red handbag will ensure a five dollar contribution is directed to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. In addition, a ribbon accompanies each purchased handbag. A blue ribbon attached to a handbag, for instance, represents colon cancer awareness while a pink ribbon represents breast cancer awareness. Angela & Roi’s online site includes a complete list of the non-profit organizations they have partnered with as well as a list outlining which causes are associated with the color of their handbags and coordinated ribbons.
Casual Shoulder Bag

Another reason to consider this brand’s handbag offerings is that their handbags are completely affordable. Their handbags currently range in price from $65 to $150. My personal favorite Angela & Roi handbag is the Ostrich over-sized tote. It is the kind of relaxed structure, luxe-look bag that speaks to me. This particular bag is popular based on the number of handbags that were sold out when I browsed the site.
Ostrich Over-Sized Tote

My advice: If you find yourself attached to a specific handbag in Angela & Roi's collection, upon browsing their website, it is best to make an immediate purchase due to the popularity of their handbags. Sometimes, it's best to not let a good handbag get away.

I would love to hear from you after you browse Angela & Roi's site at www.angelaroi.com or if you are the owner of an Angela & Roi handbag.

Please leave a comment. I look forward to them and always respond.

Suit Up

Are you prepared to suit up this year? Be prepared to shop until you drop if you shop at brick and mortar stores for your suits. My musings are prompted by my visit, a couple of weeks ago, to no less than five budget-friendly chain and department stores before I discovered a well stocked women’s suits section at one of them. A month ago, I would never have imagined that I would be asking the question, Are retailers ignoring the existing market for affordable women's suits? I encountered plenty of bumps in the road during my mission to find suits that were both stylish and affordable. At the conclusion of my fashion hunt, I found myself asking, is the suit still relevant? Is it just me or is there still a need for traditional suit attire in certain situations and industries? I love luxury designer suits such as those featured here in my post but realistically I can not afford them.
Ralph Lauren Suit; From the Spring 2014 RTW Collection
(Sir) Paul Smith; From the Spring 2014 RTW Collection

I started my suit shopping journey like a paratrooper about to storm a fortress. I wanted to add a couple of basic, yet fashionable, suits to my wardrobe. Did I really need these suits? Probably not; but I could feel disassociation disorder coming on for the current suits in my wardrobe. I wanted suits that would announce to the world: I am stylish, confident, and a take no prisoners’ kind of fashionista. I was knocked out of my happy zone soon after my hunt began:

  • Store number one: The Store Managers explained to me that the company had decided to focus less on suits and more on separates and, as a result, they did not have a women’s suits’ section.
  • Store number two: The Store Manager stated that only certain store locations had women’s suits in stock. I moved quickly on to another location of the same retailer’s.
  •  Store number three: I initially thought I hit the jackpot when I spotted a women’s suits section but my optimism was short-lived. The section mostly consisted of suits that lacked panache, style and a certain savoir faire.
  •  Store number four: I struck out again but I am a glutton for punishment when it comes to fashion so I kept on trekking.
  • Store number five: I came, I saw and I conquered. I found two suits that met my requirements at K & G, self-labeled as a Fashion Superstore. The irony is that I am not a regular patron of K & G because the suits are usually so typical, if you know what I mean, and I tend to favor the atypical.
Note: The other stores I visited, in no particular order include, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Macy's and Stein Mart.

I became the owner of a mixed-media black pants suit which has faux-leather panels at the sleeves and faux-leather lapels. Can we say it together? Oh yeah, Oh yeah! I now also possess a black and white skirt suit which I selected because the dynamic duo of black and white is elegant, timeless and on-trend. I achieved another slam-dunk. I have my new power suits now hear me roar.

A Graphic Top and Suit Pants Are a Pair with Flair
I began to consider, during my shopping adventure, that perhaps women’s suits for those within a certain income bracket were a dying breed; however, since then I have come to believe that my initial assessment could not have been more wrong. Suits will remain an important, if currently less trendy, wardrobe choice for women simply because of the essence of individual style.

It is effortless to toss a suit jacket over a casual dress or to pair it with a pair of jeans. The same ease can be found by pairing suit pants with a graphic top or tee and leather jacket. The endurance of women’s suits is all about creativity. As long as we remain inspired by fashion we will continue to come up with endless possibilities for re-styling our suits into separates. Based on the outfit of the day photos I see when I read or visit blogs, by so many of you, the styling talent is immense and immeasurable. As a result, women’s suits will continue to thrive.

Liebster Award

I was nominated for a Liebster Award by Dina Bella. My reaction was astonishment that I would be considered for an award followed by curiosity about the history of the award. The origins of this award are actually quite mysterious. After conducting research, I learned that although the award rules have changed a couple of times the purpose of the award is truly to honor bloggers who have a low number of followers. As someone whom constantly strives to be creative in the information I present and the quality of how I present the information in my blog I am a cheerleader for this award. I have met so many inspirational and talented bloggers since I started my blog whom have the talent but not a large following; therefore, I am more than happy to spread the word about several of them. I have outlined the nomination requirements below.

A nominee must:

  • write a post about the Liebster Award
  • thank the blogger(s) whom nominated them
  • cite 11 facts about him or herself
  • also nominate a blogger who has less than 200 followers
  • answer 11 questions presented by the blogger whom nominated them
  • create 11 new questions for the nominated bloggers to answer
Below are 11 facts about myself:

I am from St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.
I am a freelance fashion stylist.
I love to listen to a variety of music from country to pop to vintage rock and roll.
I love watching television shows based on fantasy.
I love candy such as strawberry licorice and jolly ranchers.
I love "good" horror movies.
I am petite but don't necessarily style myself like I am.
My favorite color is red.
I am frequently told that I am hilarious.
I love high-heeled shoes.
I love to read fiction novels.

Dina Bella's Questions to Me:

Who is your favorite designer?

It is hard to select just one but I love Balmain's designs right now.

If there was one celebrity you would make over, who would it be?
Music artist Kesha

What fashion item you can't live without it?
A leather jacket. They can be worn with anything.

Who influenced your fashion sensibility?
My mother. I used to love watching her put on her make-up and get dressed to go out. I fell in love with fashion from a young age as a result of her laid-back, glamorous style.

What is your favorite television series, old or new?
Sleepy Hollow is my current favorite television series.

If you can live one day in the life of a movie..which one would it be?
American Hustle because I love the clothes and accessories featured in the movie.

If you had the chance to interview someone for your blog who would it be?
Corri McFadden from eDrop-Off

What fashion item in your closet (if forced) would you give away?
My black suede BCBG MaxAzria tall boots. They just completely consume my legs because of their length and my petite height (but I do love them so).  I would want to make sure they went to a good home.

Which celebrity you can do without?
Andy Dick. I just don't get him.

What is the best fashion advice anyone ever gave you?
Buy your jeans in regular length and don't hem them; which I thought was strange because I am petite. The advise-giver stated that I should just wear higher heels. This advice actually works well for me because I do wear high-heels and I save on tailoring costs.

Top three songs in your music playlist right now?

Holy Grail, Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake
Night Train, Jason Aldean
Perfume, Britney Spears

Wicked Emerald Redux

Radiant orchid is the color of 2014, having received the baton from Pantone; however, emerald will continue to dominate during the fall and winter season of 2014. I appreciate the responses I received after my Wicked Emerald post. Many of you have favorite emerald pieces in your wardrobe or either have or will be decorating your home with this beautiful color. I decided to compile, for those of us whom love this dynamic green shade, a collage of some of my favorite past and present emerald pieces. This green shade reigns supreme as it continues to be championed by fashion icons such as Kate Middleton to designers such as Oscar de la Renta. I have also compiled a list of myths and facts about emerald. I hope you enjoy the collage and the list. I look forward to your feedback.

Several historical figures are associated with the color or the gemstone. Please view a list of myths and facts associated with emerald.
